KETTLEBELL TRAINING - "A total gym in the palm of your hand"

Kettlebells are believed to have originated over 2000 years ago. Some believe they were created in ancient Greece, and used in the early Olympic Games, and other believe that the Russians invented them & their modern-day use.

There are references to a "girya" literally meaning 'of a weight with a handle', in early Russian dictionaries and comprehensive literature indicating the use of Kettlebell training by the Russian military. They saw the advantages of kettlebell training and soon military personnel were trained and conditioned with kettlebells for superior physical conditioning.

Kettlebells work the entire body, unlike weight machines that work a single muscle or muscle group, and they therefore provide enormous benefits. A kettlebell workout is said to be more effective, and yields better results in less time, than workouts with traditional weights. One of the reasons for this is that the Kettlebell's centre of mass is extended beyond the hand and changes as the kettlebell "swings" and moves which mean that more muscle groups have to be utilised to balance and keep the kettlebell under control. The shape of the kettlebell allows for swing movements and release moves that are not possible with traditional dumbbells so it brings another level to weight training.

The extensive benefits of Kettlebell training has led to a massive increase in the popularity of kettlebell use in gyms as well as by athletes, especially among mixed martial arts fighters.

The benefits include:

  • Cardiovascular conditioning
  • Fat loss
  • Strength gain
  • Increased Muscular endurance. (Especially the legs, buttocks and lower back)
  • Increased Stamina
  • Improved Muscle Tone
